Root Canal Treatment
A root canal is a dental procedure that involves the removal of infection from the inside of a tooth. The nerves of a tooth and pulp may be inflamed, irritated, or infected by bacteria as a result of decay, a crack in the tooth, repeated dental procedures, or trauma to the face.
Treatment Process
At the center of your tooth is pulp. The pulp is a collection of blood vessels that helps to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp needs to be addressed through a root canal. This infected pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits depending on the treatment required.
Following root canal treatment, your tooth may feel some sensitivity or tenderness for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen are generally effective in relieving discomfort, but prescription medications may also be given if needed. During this period, it may help to avoid biting hard on the affected tooth. All of these symptoms, however, should be temporary.
A root canal leaves the treated tooth in a fragile state because there is no pulp to deliver nutrients to the tooth. A dental crown or other restoration is typically required to provide protection to the tooth. Dr. Wolfenden will determine which restoration method best fits your personal oral health needs.
